On the road
Traveling is going really well. Since leaving Wisconsin, I’ve gone through Canada (Toronto, Montreal, and Quebec City) Maine (Greenville, Bar Harbor, Portland) Vermont (Woodstock, Burlington) Massachusetts (Boston area) and am now in the Washington DC area. That’s just listing the places I’ve slept, there have been day trips to other locales, including up a few mountains, down a few gorges, and down several rivers.
I haven’t been taking very many pictures because I just haven’t been in the mood. I realize some people might find this horrifying, but I’m not one to ruin a vacation through my efforts to document my vacation.
I did snap the moose I saw. He’s just a little guy, probably 2 years old.
Also, fabric stores. All of the fabric stores I found in Toronto looked like this:
My friend who was with me for the Canada stretch said they were “scary” I was more of a mind that they were fascinating.
I made it to a fabric store in Maine (Ale Wives) and was pleased to find that it looked like this:
I also found a few in Vermont, just by chance (walking by) because Yelp and Garmin didn’t know of any and my friend in Burlington didn’t have a phone book. Fabric store owners: if you aren’t listed on Yelp, add yourself.
I haven’t gotten much hand-stitching done as I seem to pick up a book rather than my sewing kit when I have a moment to myself; I’ve sped through Katherine

I don't like to take pictures either–I took only 32 photos during five weeks in Africa. I don't like experiencing the world through a lens, you know?
Sounds like a fantastic trip! I grew up in VT, and spent a lot of time in Woodstock. Did you hike Mt. Tom? LOVE your blog, thanks for the inspiration.

Yay! A moose! I like the messy store. There's one in Tucson that looks a lot like that (and also had no air conditioning.) It was really hot, but we found some great stuff in there!
Sounds like a great trip! I'm terrible at sorting through disorganized stores of any kind. I much prefer the store in Maine.
I promise you that not all Canadian fabric stores are like that. Glad to hear that you are having a good break.
A really great book, The Post Office Girl by Stefan Zweig. Also, People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. Have fun!
Would second the Geraldine Brooks suggestion but try March-fantastic; also her book Year of Wonders, v gd but not quite as good as March. Barbara Trapido's writing is amusing and clever, such as Brother of the More Famous Jack and Steinbeck's Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday are quirky, charming and colourful.
i hope you're enjoying the DC area. If the heat is too overwhelming head south about an hour to St. Mary's county. It's just a little cooler, 82 at 11pm instead of 92.
It sounds like you are enjoying your travels. Our local library has a few book shelves in the lobby area where patrons can donate books and they sell them for about 50 cents. I've not been for a while, but you never know what you'll find.
The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer & Annie Barrows is one of the best books I've read in a long time. Also Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear – first in a series. After I read the first, I had to read all the others asap.
If you thought the Canadian stores were fascinating and you're passing back through Boston, we've got a couple awesome discount places like that in Cambridge & Somerville.
That Canadian store looks more like a fabricland than a quilt shop. I just finished The Help and really enjoyed it. Also enjoyed The Time Travellers Wife, be careful though you may have to stay in one place until you finish it!
It looks to me like you were hanging out on Queen Street West in Toronto. The fabric stores are c-r-a-z-y! But also awesome. Hard to find designer lines here though.
