Quilt Con 2023 – I’m teaching! Supply lists, class info, etc.

I’m really pumped to be teaching at Quilt Con in February!

SOFT CRITICISM – space available!

I have three class to chose from, the first one is SOFT CRITICISM. This is a discussion class about studio practices that can help you get unstuck. What do we do when our quilt starts to look ugly? What do we do when all our excitement for quilting disappears? How can we figure out the next steps for ourselves and our quilts? With 20 years of teaching experience and 25 years of quilting experience, I have learned a thing or two about how to keep going, when to stop, and what to do when you just need a hug (hint: ask for a hug!)

Supply list for SOFT CRITICISM:

  • pen or pencil
  • paper for notetaking
  • a quilt that is “stuck”, either bring the quilt or email a clear photo of it to rossiecrafts@gmail.com subject line QUILT CON SOFT CRITICISM — let me know if you are in the Thursday class or the Friday class

GREEN – limited space available!

The second class I’m teaching is all about using the color GREEN in your quilts. Bring green fabric, play with green fabric, and think about green fabric.

Is this a color theory course? Not in the typical sense. Why? Because (1) We’re learning about ONE COLOR. (2) We’re focused on that color as it exists on PRINTED fabric. I came to quilting because of the printed fabric and I stay for the printed fabric. Color theory that is based on paint mixing really only works with solid fabrics and I’m not here for solid fabric, are you? (3) We’re not going to explore the color wheel, we’re going to explore our personal relationships to the color green, what we can use it to express, and how we can use it in our quilts.

Supply list for GREEN:

Required supplies:

  • 4 fat quarters of printed quilting fabric that contains multiple colors, but are mostly GREEN–1 light green, 1 medium green, 1 dark green, 1 additional green
  • 2 fat quarters of printed quilting fabric that INCLUDES green, but isn’t mostly green.
  • 2 pieces of solid green fabric – any size from 10″ square up
  • 2 additional pieces of fabric of any color or print/solid type – any size from 10″ square up

Optional supplies:

  • additional fabrics, especially additional green prints and scraps that add variety to your class stash
  • snips or scissors
  • Classrooms will have rotary cutters and mats to share, feel free to bring a set of these tools for personal use: 45mm rotary cutter, small cutting mat, small/medium rotary ruler

SCRAPTACULAR IMPROV – sold out, but you can add to waitlist in case there is a cancellation!

Last but not least, I have two sessions of “Scrap-tacular Improv.” I have a mad passion for printed fabrics and I like to combine pieces from across a wide variety of designers. How can a quilter sort out which fabrics combine nicely with others when they are working from a big jumble of scraps? Come and learn my process!

Supply list for SCRAP-TACULAR IMPROV:

Required supplies:

  • Printed fabric (not solids) that you want to set the tone/palette for your scrappy quilt.  Can be a pre-cut bundle (jelly roll, charm pack, 10″ square, a few fat quarters, etc) or just one colorful print.
  • 1/2-yard of solid fabric that you want in your quilt.
  • 1 quart-size bag of printed scraps that *might* work in your quilt.
  • 5 unique scraps to donate to the class for demonstration (may end up in someone else’s quilt!) at least 3″ square each

Optional supplies:

  • additional fabrics, perhaps another quart bag of scraps, focusing on white prints and solids
  • snips or scissors
  • Classrooms will have rotary cutters and mats to share, feel free to bring a set of these tools for personal use: 45mm rotary cutter, small cutting mat, small/medium rotary ruler
