Flurry Quilt
It’s the weekend after Thanksgiving, which means the nearby park’s picnic area is filled with Christmas Trees and for $45, you can have one of your choosing.
This year, given the global pandemic and the death of my mother-in-law (to cancer), I’m squelching my inner grinch and leaning into the cheer. Having a almost-three-year-old who hollers, “I love Christmas!” whenever the topic comes up, might be helping me grow my heart by a size or two.
We’ve got two real trees this year–one on the porch and another in the great room. This is in addition to four small fake ones and numerous other decorations. A new part of the decor this year is a quilt I made from Flurry fabrics by Ruby Star Society.
I first fell in love with the bears in this fabric line & I ended up ordering a fat quarter bundle after seeing that for the most part, the line is happy and wintery, not so much Christmas-y.
Having only a fat-quarter pack to work from and wanting to highlight the bears, which are quite tall, I decided to make LARGE economy blocks & to fill in the fabric bouquet with scraps or possibly yardage from my stash.
I used this tutorial for the 12″ economy blocks with the small adjustment of making the centers from 4-patches of 3-12/” squares, rather than a single 6-1/2″ square.
I had it quilted by Kathy Koch, a friend who lives in the area. She did a brilliant job.
It’s a great quilt to cuddle under and also cheers up our couch when not in use!
